Join the Rational Benevolence Collaboratory and help end suffering, help create joy.

The Rational Benevolence Collaboratory is an intellectual experiment in which researchers collaborate to deeply re-think our solutions to the problems of widespread suffering and scarce joy.

Researchers try to suspend all ideological biases and approach these problems from a position of neutral objectivity. (They put their sacred cows out to pasture and start from scratch.) To achieve this neutral objectivity, researchers use various methods of radical premise-checking (such as the Socratic Method).

Bring your minds & hearts, and maybe a notebook.

Currently, at the Oly Old Time music class, which now takes place on Wednesdays, you can...

"Learn how to play Banjo, Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, washtub bass, or ukulele. Beginners, people of all ages, and very experienced musicians are all welcome and needed for a valuable learning environment. Come to Jam, Teach, Learn, Form a Band, Sing, or just Listen. Whether you have been playing your whole life or have never touched an instrument before. There is an instrument library available for use if you do not have your own instrument or if transporting your instrument is complicated due to its size or its fear of rain.

The Rational Benevolence Collaboratory is an intellectual experiment in which researchers collaborate to deeply re-think our solutions to the problems of widespread suffering and scarce joy.

Modern European Board Games
Every Third Saturday, NOON - 5PM

This is a hands-on exploration of the new strategy games, primarily from Europe. By "hands-on exploration" we mean we'll be learning how to play the games!
Modern board-gaming is a fun, social hobby, that has been growing due to the new types of games available. In general, the characteristics the games tend to have in common are:

1. No player elimination -- everyone plays through the whole game
2. Genuine strategy -- the decisions you make affect what happens in the game.
3. Reasonable playing times -- the typical game lasts somewhere between one and three hours.

The themes are often historical in nature. For example, in the game Hansa every player is a merchant in the Hanseatic League, and in the game 1960 players compete by guiding the election campaigns of Nixon and JFK.

This "class" is meant as an opportunity to learn about the new games and just to have a good time. It is intended for adults or soon-to-be adults, but you may discover games which would be accessible to precocious children. Many of the games are competitive by nature, but we do not stress the competitive aspect and there are no prizes. After-all, most players will be playing the game for the first time and everyone should be a good sport.

The Freeschool is working with the Olympia Fun Co-op (OFC http://www.OlympiaFUncoop.org ) and FemPeacePower ( http://www.FemPeacePower.org ) to create our TV Show, News program and Film Series called 'The Art of Having Fun!

Our show will air on Fridays and Mondays at 11:59pm on TCTV Channel 22.

If you have a videocamera please ask the facilitator of this class for permission
to video the workshop so that the Freeschool can share it with others. After you film the event, submit the video tape to the Freeschool as a MiniDv tape and we will air it on our Tv Show and Film Series, 'The Art of Having Fun', which airs on Mondays and Fridays at 11:59pm on TCTV Channel 22. This show practices freedom of speech in every way, manner and form so no censorship is
needed nor requested of your facilitators or the people attending the class.

Please leave 5 minutes at the start of the tape for editing and introduction. If the video is longer than 28 minutes minutes (including the 5 minutes of blank tape space at the beginning that we need) please keep in mind that the Freeschool may air it as a multi-part series or air it as one uninteruupted film at a different time slot
on TCTV Channel 22. Also, please keep in mind that if your video promotes the purchase of item/services or promotes government legislation we will not air it because we do not air videos that appear to be commercials or that look too much like a commercial Thank you.

Currently, at the Oly Old Time music class, which now takes place on Wednesdays, you can...

"Learn how to play Banjo, Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, washtub bass, or ukulele. Beginners, people of all ages, and very experienced musicians are all welcome and needed for a valuable learning environment. Come to Jam, Teach, Learn, Form a Band, Sing, or just Listen. Whether you have been playing your whole life or have never touched an instrument before. There is an instrument library available for use if you do not have your own instrument or if transporting your instrument is complicated due to its size or its fear of rain.

The Rational Benevolence Collaboratory is an intellectual experiment in which researchers collaborate to deeply re-think our solutions to the problems of widespread suffering and scarce joy.

Researchers try to suspend all ideological biases and approach these problems from a position of neutral objectivity. (They put their sacred cows out to pasture and start from scratch.) To achieve this neutral objectivity, researchers use various methods of radical premise-checking (such as the Socratic Method).
